BOW for the Week of: October 19 to October 25, 2011

They say that every cloud has a silver lining and the aforementioned silver lining of our current economic debacle is the rise of value Wines with depth, character, and vibrancy. Recently we have discovered a wine that fits the bill, Beach House from the Western Cape of South Africa.

Beach House was created in 2009 by the team at Douglas Green Wines, a name synonymous with wine in South Africa for nearly seven decades. The mission was to produce a proprietary white wine that paired well with the fabulous seafood from the nearby Atlantic and Indian Oceans for centuries. The wine is also designed to be crisp, fresh, fruity and flavorful appealing to a large consumer base that included the young and old, male and female, sophisticated and novice.

This great bargain Wine is created by winemaker Jaco Potieger. The Wine was always determined to be based on Suavignon Blanc but the first versions of the Wine were blended with Rhine Reisling and other varietals before dicovering the perfect marriage of grape varietals.  “After trying a few other varieties like chenin and chardonnay we ended up with Semillon, which immediately marries 100% with the Sauvignon Blanc. The Semillon adds more body to the Sauvignon Blanc and softens the natural acidity of the sauvignon without toning down the crisp freshness of the wine,” explains Potieger.

The pairing of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillion is traditionally found in many of the white Wines from Bordeaux and clearly these two varietals have the same compatability in South Aftrica’s Western Cape.

We are big fans of this Wine and further appreciate that this vibrant Wine is bottled with a screw-top closure ensuring freshness. Bravo!

Tasting Notes:

Brilliant pale straw color. The nose is ultra fresh with scents of citrus juice and zest, freshly cut grass, pomelo, lemongrass, and red grapefruit with a great supporting minerality. Vibrant and ideally balanced on the palate with moderate alcohol as well. The perfect house wine working well as a solo performer while it pairs easily with smoked fish, pork sausages, or composite salads. A best buy. $9.99
