Beverage of the Week (B.O.W)

BOW for the Week of: June 26 to July 2, 2013

BevX readers are very familiar with the great wines from Stepping Stone by Cornerstone (sister label of Cornerstone Cellars). The entire range has been a hit with us from day-one and we anxiously await the arrival of each new vintage. These are simply some of the best and most reliable wines made anywhere. Each wine has the unmistakable thumb print of Craig Camp, Cornerstone's managing partner. Craig is a wine industry veteran with a sharp palate. He drinks wines with depth, style, and balance and this is the only kind of wine he will make.

The Stepping Stone by Cornerstone Rocks! is a Wine of the vintage thus no varietal blend is offered on the label. Their slogan is, "The blend is our secret, the pleasure is all yours. Rocks! is inspired by the blends of Southern France where the blends are reflections of their vintage carrying from vintage to vintage.

These are the ultimate house wines for true wine lovers. Both wines are remarkably versatile marrying well with most any summer fare while needing nothing more than a glass. The red Rocks! is wonderfully juicy while the white is bright and tropical with spicy accents. Both wines are blessed with a vibrant dose of acidity. The limited release of just north of 1,000 cases of Rocks! White and less than 1,000 cases of Rocks! Red will be available for a limited time so get it while you can.

Tasting Notes:

Red - Deep, dark ruby red with purple edges. The nose is incredibly generous offering loads of ripe, crushed blackberries, raspberries, and blueberry with hints of strawberry, allspice, black pepper, clove, and vanilla. The palate is lush and juicy while vibrant inviting sip after sip. Perfect balance is this wine’s secret weapon. The ripe flavors are bold while nimble with soft well-knit tannins that add structure without intruding on the complex melange of fruit. A very congenial wine at the table pairing well with tomato sauce, grilled meats, country pâté or just a glass.

White - Brilliant pale golden color. The aromatics are vibrant and glamorous with tropical fruit notes. Lychee, pineapple, and papaya mingle with tart green apple and hints of ginger. The palate echoes the nose offering a generous dose of ripe fruit with a crisp citrus edge and spicy ginger notes to add balance and intrigue. Please allow this wine to warm a bit as when it’s fresh from the fridge the subtle supporting notes are subdued. Think of this as a Chardonnay with an exotic accent.
