Beverage of the Week (B.O.W)

BOW for the Week of: February 24 to March 2, 2009
This great wine offers two treats in one. First, it’s a great American born Rosé with fruit, acid, and above all, balance. Second it is made primarily from Nebbiolo, a grape variety seldom planted and used in the US. Nebbiolo is a noble red variety from the northwest of Italy where if produces the famous Piedmont wines of Barolo and Barbaresco.
Terra d’Oro is a new (launched just weeks ago) brand with a deep history being a creation of the Trinchero family. The Trinchero Family Estates has been a pioneer in the California wine industry since 1947. The wines hail from the heart of Amador County. They are made in the former Montevina Winery. The brand was created to focus on the great lots of single-vineyard wines. Terra d’Oro specializes in wines made from Italian varietals and a collection of single-vineyard Zinfandels.
“These wines really speak to the soul of the region and represent the very best of the wines in our cellar from our beloved Amador County,” Vice President and General Manager Jeff Meyers.
We were very pleased to see one of the inaugural Terra d’Oro wines (with many more on the way). The Rosé has everything that we seek in a pink wine. It possesses varietal character meaning it has the flavor and character of the grape chosen grape variety. It is also generous with fruit while equally generous with vibrant acidity, moderate alcohol, and affordable. It is classically fruity and tart with a mélange of supporting flavors. It has enough gusto to pair very well with a range of foods from spicy Mexican and Thai to subtle fish dishes.
