Beverage of the Week (B.O.W)

BOW for the Week of: October 6 to October 12, 2010

We have found a Vodka that smells like Victory! (Okay, I’m sorry but I couldn’t resist and I won’t take the easy path again – today).

As we all know, Vodka can be made with a great number of raw materials. Practically anything that processes fermentable sugars can be fermented and then distilled to a very high degree and call itself Vodka. The choice of raw material is a tremendous factor regarding the taste, aroma, and texture of a finished Vodka. Contrary to popular belief, potato is not the most common material used by the Vodka producer. In fact it is one of the most expensive and difficult materials to use. However, it does create a Vodka with a great texture being silky and unctuous.

Victory Vodka is made with a careful blend of three varieties of potatoes (Stobrawa, Mila, Glada) to create a Vodka with great aromatics and classic flavors. The name honors the Polish Hussars, the commonwealth army, who brought Victory to Europe in the Battle of Vienna in 1683. The battle is depicted on the back of the bottle and viewed through the bold “V” presented on the front of the bottle.

This great Vodka has just been released in the US having won several prestigious accolades in Europe. It may not yet be available in your market but due to the magic of the Internet you can order it for home delivery (assuming that your state is enlightened enough to allow such liberties).

Tasting Notes:

Crystal clear. The nose is fresh and expressive with soft mineral tones bolstered by sweet cream. Once on the palate this Vodka’s greatest asset, its silky texture, comes shining though giving dimension to the aromatics while finishing clean with a firm mineral note and faint citrus accents. A real mouthful that comes alive with a quick chill over fresh cracked ice. Great for cocktails but this Vodka needs nothing but a glass. A classic. $18.99
