BOW for the Week of: December 14 to December 20, 2011

Goose Island is Chicago’s greatest regional brewery growing from a single brewpub on Chicago’s north side in 1988 to now being bottled and sold in 15 states as well as the UK. (My apologies to those living in areas without access to Goose Island Beers.)

Goose Island Brewery has earned itself a loyal following with their flavorful line-up of regulars and seasonal brews that always seem to strike the perfect balance of classical styling with a steadfast Goose Island house style accent. Over a dozen different styles are produced each year.

We love this Ale. This Ale is made in the great old tradition of English Mild Ales, a style that is sadly in the shadows. This Ale proves that a Beer need not be high in alcohol or saturated with hops to be distinctive. It is wonderfully complex with a brilliant mélange of malts that reveal different nuances at the subtly different temperatures that evolve from the top of the pint to the bottom. A wonderful session Ale and one of the few reasons to welcome winter...

Tasting Notes:

A deep and brilliant chestnut brown color with a thick white head. The nose is wonderfully vibrant and complex with caramel malt in the lead with accents of freshly baked pumpernickel rye bread with hints of dried figs and currants. The palate echoes the nose delivering a beautifully silky texture with just enough acidity and hop notes to refresh. A perfect way to spend a winter’s day. $7.99 per six-pack
