In 1985 Jim Koch launched his now iconic Sam Adams Boston Lager on Patriot’s Day in Boston. The recipe for this world famous brew is an adaptation of an old family recipe developed by Louis Koch in 1860 (Louis Koch Lager was a thriving brand out of St. Louis until Prohibition). In the year of its debut, Sam Adams Boston Lager was named the “Best Beer in America” at the Great America Beer Festival.

The old portion of the brewery was once home to the Bernried Monastery and has the look of an old abbey and seamlessly marries with the new modern brewery completed in 1999.
